The Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal are covered in tropical rainforest. In the collective memory of the people who have lived there for millennia, ways of coping with local natural disasters have been identified. Since their contact with the so-called outside world is extremely limited, this raises numerous complex questions from an ethnographic perspective regarding “the foreign” and “the familiar.”
