Mudflat walk to the island Minsener Oog

After exploring the topic of islands from a theoretical perspective in the exhibition Sand and Salt – Islands Found and Lost, this afternoon’s activity takes a hands-on approach. The Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven, in collaboration with certified and experienced mudflat guide and national park guide Gerke Enno Ennen, invites you to a mudflat hike to the uninhabited island of Minsener Oog. This man-made island was created in the early 20th century to protect the shipping channel leading to the ports of Wilhelmshaven and Bremerhaven. Today, the island is an important breeding ground for birds and part of the quiet zone of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. The hike lasts about four and a half hours – into the sunset and moonrise. Be sure to bring weather-appropriate clothing (quick-drying shorts and snug-fitting sneakers), your own provisions, and be in good physical condition.
