But their seclusion – and the associated longing among island visitors not to be disturbed – also holds a special allure. From another perspective, it is their fragility and vulnerability that make these environments so special. As small landmasses, islands are threatened by rising sea levels due to climate change just as much as they are by humanity’s military experiments (Bikini Atoll). The exhibition tour focuses equally on mythical sunken islands and the present-day reality of islands – amidst climate change, marine debris, and overtourism.
